My Teaching Assistant :D
This
semester I am doing school experience in Asisi high school, Menteng
Dalam-Tebet. The school is located in the school complex and consists of
+/- 20 teachers and +/- 250 students consisting of 4 classes at
first-grade, 3 classes at second-grade and 3 classes at three-grade. In
this school there are 3 mathematic teachers for each grade, where Mr.
Heru for first-grade, Mrs. Agnes for second-grade, and Mr. Sugeng for
three-grade. In this school all the citizens of the school is so good,
friendly, and very welcoming and assume us (SSE students) as part of
them.
In
the program this semester, the Teaching Assistant, I was tasked with
Rina Fardiana, where Mr. Heru and Mrs. Agnes as the supervising teacher
because we were assigned to observe and perform activities of teaching
assistant at first-grade and second-grade.
In
the first week, I was assigned to (only) observed in class 1 and 2 for
adapt and get to know the students’characteristics. But unfortunately,
the second-grade must follow the leave-in program to Magelang held by
the school for a week. During this week, I just face to face (observe
and consult about the student) by Pak Heru one time because he was
handle the second-grade students who follow the leave-in, so tasks’ Mr.
Heru in handling the material was taken a classroom by Mrs Agnes. Not
only observing, I also help the mathematics teachers is concerned in
teaching and learning are progressing, like helping students difficulty
in understanding the material being discussed (so there is interaction
between me and the students in answering questions about the material).
Based
on the observations in first-grade which consists of four classes, each
class has each character in view and facing mathematics. Not only
their way of thinking that affect their learning of mathematics,
teacher factors also influence it. For example, first-grade students
should be handled by Mr. Heru more comfortable and understand by him
explain, but he most control the second grade and finally was replaced
by Mrs. Agnes in some time, some students feel less comfortable and feel
less understood from her explanation. This resulted in a less conducive
atmosphere for learning and less effective, because of the comfort
factor of the students were in class and follow the lessons, so as to
enable the learning objectives are only achieved by some students, not
by all students.
In
this situation, I positioned myself to help students strengthen their
understanding of the concept the material being discussed. Not only for
teaching assistant activities, it can be a practice for me in facing the
real classroom. Besides teaching assistant activities and consult
about character and achievements of students with the supervising
teacher is concerned, I was also consulted in designing
the lesson plan for create effective teaching what I would do in the
next week. But unfortunately for some reason, my supervising teacher
(Mr. Heru) is not able to give his lesson plan as a reference for me.
So
in this week, my activities was just observing and see more about the
characteristics of the students who will I am facing and to practicing
facing the students in the real classroom. I hope that the activities I
did during this week can be basic for me in teaching in the program this
semester–teaching assistant, and can help me slowly but surely in
preparation myself to be a teacher who can be a friend for my students,
kind, and professional too, of course, I hope.
